Magic & Mind Games: Getting Through School Alive!

"Sleight of hand. Twitch of eye. That's magic, and that's what John Fabjance of Mt. Prospect counts on when he performs. But if you think all he's doing is tricks as he produces coins from nowhere or displays the playing card you were thinking about, you've fallen under the spell of 'Mind Games' as he calls his show. " Fabjance's magic act usually delivers a message, often about alcohol. It's not a sermon but a quiet message, presented with a practiced subtlety that makes his presentation different from the typical anti-drug and anti-alcohol lecture that people, students in particular, are accustomed to hearing."

- Chicago Tribune

September 2008

"A unique interactive presentation."

"If you want to get and keep the attention of your athletes while alcohol awareness messages are delivered, this is a good program."

"John Fabjance's presentation includes audience participation with comedy, magic, music, and video. John explains and demonstrates denial, rationalization, enabling, peer pressure, and making good choices with student volunteers and his own special brand of magic and humor."

"When he pickpockets students' watches, John shows everyone just how vulnerable they are. He also explains how students can be vulnerable when advertisers try to trick them with hidden persuaders in their commercials to encourage young people to drink more. Movies and TV also help create false myths of heavy drinking on campuses nationwide which can negatively affect the expectations and attitudes of incoming freshman athletes."

"Compared to some of the physiological presentations we have attempted on this subject, John’s was more subtle in message and much more entertaining in delivery."

- Kerry Prather, Director of Athletics, Head Men's Basketball Coach, Franklin College

Magically Speaking

Fabjance Goes Where They Are - Anywhere on Campus! Mind Games & Magic requires no stage. There are no traditional staging needs because 'he goes where they are'. John seeks out his audience - and he finds them! He is perfectly comfortable (and actually prefers!) going anywhere on your campus where students gather: cafeterias, classrooms, dorms, nooners, cookouts, student unions, in line for class registration, and all points in-between.

Slogans and other obviously loaded messages are discounted or ignored by students. They are not subtle. They evoke resistance and hostility and cause people to put up barriers against additional information. Magic dissolves resistance. And while their Alcohol Awareness Programsattention is absorbed by the fun and mystery of magic, your substance abuse awareness messages and themes slide into their thinking much more easily.

Like a heat-seeking missile, John creates his audience, person by person. Going from person to person, table to table accomplishes two important objectives-- it makes a greater impact on students, encouraging them to interact and participate, and it blows away table tents and posters as effective promotion if you do opt for a traditional evening performance.
